Clearsense CTO Jonathan Cook argues that cloud migrations default to moving everything unless someone stops it, which lets application portfolios balloon instead of getting evaluated. Before any migration, the real question to ask is whether people actually need the application itself, or just the data sitting inside it. From there, he lays out four possible destinations for retired data — dispose, cold archive, active archive, or promote — and argues every application should carry a retirement or revisit date from the start, so decisions never quietly stall without an owner.
