The Archive Is Healthcare’s Most Overlooked AI Asset

September 2, 2026

HIStalk features CTO Jonathan Cook,  Readers Write blog highlights how most health systems point AI at their live systems while ignoring the one place their full institutional history lives: the archive.

Health systems are pointing AI at the systems they run today, almost never at the archive, even though it holds decades of clinical, financial, and operational history. Today it's only used for retention: pull an old record when legal or a patient needs it. It's never mined for trending, analytics, or model training, because it was built to preserve records, not answer questions, so nobody can vouch for whether the data is complete, validated, or traceable to its source. That's the real opportunity: curate it once, and it becomes a queryable, source-grounded layer of institutional memory AI can actually trust.

That approach also beats the default plan of wiring AI into every live system, each with its own API and access rules, which is slow and never fully finishes. The archive already consolidated the organization's history in one place. Curate it once, and you get a foundation for enterprise AI without touching every production system, using data that's already been stored, protected, and audited for years.
